It was another cold night in Manhattan. I was working downtown and at about 5:30 AM saw a building just north of the World Financial Center (just over the highway from the World Trade Center) with flames coming out of it. The building is still being constructed but it had to be 30 stories tall and the fire was on the floor just below the top floor. I watched as fire engine after fire engine showed up at this fire. As I was a looking at it I thought that since the building is just being built their likely is not much to burn up there, so the situation was not as dire as a normal fire. Also there were no residents so no one was in danger... except the firefighters. I wondered how they were going to put the fire out. Did they have a truck with a basket that could reach that high? It was way up there. Just as that thought crossed my mind I saw the construction elevator on the side of the building start to rise. "They are going up there to fight the fire!" I thought as the elevator continued to rise. Being only a few blocks from the World Trade Center I couldn't help but remeber back over 5 years ago. The elevator stopped on the floor with the fire on it and I could barely make out the firefighters and their flashlights getting onto the floor. Within a few minutes I could see the intensity of the fire lessen and I knew the brave firemen had done their job again.
They sacrifice their own safety and lives for the rest of us and at 5:30am on January 10th I don't think anyone really noticed except a few people. Who knows how many firemen are risking their lives for you while your sleeping?
As cold the night was is how bright it is out this morning. Seems a little more winter like now. I won't be taking Danica to the park until we get a little warmer. Allie let me sleep when she got home from work yesterday, so I was well rested for work last night and for watching Danica today. Thank you Allie. Tonight I will let her rest.
