To Sleep Or Not To Sleep?

Yesterday Danica napped for almost three consecutive hours. On any given day I'll take two plus hours of straight sleep over three hours broken into 2 naps. It always takes me time to fall asleep so while she might nap 3 hours I'll only really catch 2.5 and even less if it is two separate naps. So when she awoke yesterday at 12:45PM after literally passing out at 10am I figured an afternoon nap would be unlikely. She has not been napping in the afternoon recently. I still tried yesterday and she was happy as a clam in her crib, and even happier when I took her out of it for good without an afternoon nap.

She went to sleep at around 7:45, seven hours after her nap... she should be exhausted and ready for a full restful and non-stop night of sleep...right? While I was at work Allie messaged me at 11pm and finally after midnight. Danica awoke and would not go back to sleep. Actually when Allie put her back in her crib she could not even leave the room without Danica getting completely hysterical. I can leave Danica in her crib for her afternoon nap and it could be 20-30 minutes before she gets upset. Last night however she was not letting Allie even leave the room. Allie finally got her back to sleep after midnight.

Even at 10 months Danica still is not sleeping through the night. Some days she naps once, some days she naps twice, some long naps, some short naps, and now she is waking up at night and being impossible on her mother. Those "getting baby to sleep" books are great for getting your fireplace lit in the winter as far as Danica in concerned. One day she will be sleeping through the night and this all will be a distant memory, but I'm sure we will have other things to worry about then.

Don't you love the unpredictability? Our littlest is like that with the naps - sometimes one, sometimes two, or even none. Once you think you have figured it all out, it's on to the next thing to try and figure out.

I don't know if I am not trying hard enough. On one hand I don't want her to rely on me 100% to fall asleep. Whne the lights are out and she is in her crib she should no it is sleep time. Then again it seems no one knows exactlt how much sleep a baby needs.
