So we returned to the room and in less than ten minutes Allie's water broke. The anesthesiologist was still there and I thanked her, but also wondered how she was able to stick the needle in with Allie shaking. I was nervous at the thought of her going into Allies spine while she was shivering. She said " She's a great shot" and I got a chuckle out of it. Of course at that point I knew Allie could move all of her limbs. But they tell you what could possibly happen. So maybe it is not something to joke about.
So at 1:40AM we have water breakage and for the next hour Allie has steady contractions but with little pain. We talk, laugh, and anticipate what is to come. Now it isn't a slow night- of course not. The doctor has already delivered her share of babies. It is a busy night. Maybe every night is busy there, or maybe it is just because we are there. Either way the doctor comes in and says "You are ready".
Last time Allie told everyone she was ready. This time she said she wasn't sure. The doc said give a practice push. Sure enough she was ready. It went quick. With one more push I could see the folds of skin from Emily's head. It was pale and white. A few more pushes and the doctor was suctioning off around the head. She pulled the head a little and the umbilical cord was wrapped around the babies head. Which was why she was pale and white.
In the next moment I found myself doing something I did not do with Danica - cutting the umbilical cord. The cord itself is alien looking, much like the placenta when it finally comes out. I cut it and grabbed the video and digital camera's.
The next 15 minutes were a blur and Emily almost got sent to the NI CU. She wasn't breathing well but finally recovered. I was the proud father of another baby girl and Danica has a new sister. I had tears in my eyes and was also wondering how long it will be before I don't have to mow the lawn anymore!
